Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools
Nashville After Zone Alliance Update
NAZA also is currently serving Thurgood Marshall Middle School and Antioch Middle, providing after-school programs. Read more below or reply for more details.
NAZA Sites at Metro Schools Now Serving Afterschool Meals
Thanks to our partner Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, students attending NAZA sites located at an MNPS middle school are now receiving an afterschool meal each day they attend the program! "We've got a great need for afterschool programming," Apollo Middle School Principal Jon Hubble said. "To have the added benefit of the meal and the tutoring, there's nothing about this that isn't a win-win." Each day when the NAZA sites begin, over 400 students are receiving a hot meal in their school cafeteria! An article describing the program was published in the Tennessean.
3rd Annual NAZA Youth Leadership Retreat
During fall break, middle school students from NAZA sites across Nashville attended our Youth Leadership Retreat at Camp Widjiwagan. The students enjoyed hands-on team-building exercises led by staff and students from the Oasis Center, and they learned leadership skills from several workshops, including a "networking" workshop led by Metro Council member Lonnell Matthews. Inspirational speaker and former NFL player Freddie Scott challenged the students to make goals and surround themselves with friends and mentors who will help them achieve their goals. In all, the students had a fantastic time! Here is a photo album of the day's events and a news story by the Tennessean.
NAZA to Expand to McGavock and Hunter's Lane Clusters in 2014
We are very excited to announce that NAZA will be expanding to middle schools in the McGavock and Hunter's Lane High School clusters in the fall of 2014! With this expansion, NAZA sites will be serving students at 28 MNPS middle schools across Nashville in the 2014-15 school year!

Subject: Does health care insurance matter to schools, principals and teahcers?
The research says that lack of health care insurance and absenteeism are very closely connected:
1. By the 6th grade, chronic absences are a strong indicator of a future dropout. (BERC, 2011).
2. Health outcomes have a direct and significant effect on school readiness, engagement, behavior, attendance, and
academic performance (Basch, 2010)
3. The link between lack of health insurance and school absenteeism has long been established. Children without health
insurance coverage commonly do not seek medical care, including preventive visits, and do not get prescriptions filled,
increasing their risk of disease and episodes of school absences (Oslon, Tang, & Newachek, 2005)

Title I Funds Survey Results FY13 for FY14
552 A.Z. Kelley Title I Funds Surveys were returned. (A.Z. Kelley has 705 students, but only one survey needed to be turned in per family.) Three attempts were made between April 26th and May 10th by the faculty. However, 132 (24%) were invalid due to parents either not choosing an option, or choosing both. Of the valid surveys returned, the majority, 90.1% (381), voted to use the funds toward the “School Wide” option. This was how funds were used during the 2012-2013 school year. Only 7% (28) requested the funds be used toward the “Targeted Assistance” model. (Please see the results of the Parent Involvement Survey for how parents ranked spending Title I money.)
At the bottom of the funds survey, parents were asked to visit the school website to review the School Compact and Parent Involvement Policy for the 2013-2014 school year. 52% (289) approve of the documents, .9% (5) did not approve (no comments were offered as to why), and 21% (114) stated they were unable to view the documents. (These percentages were taken from the total number of surveys turned in. Some parents still marked this section correctly, even if the top portion was invalid.)
Additional comments were as follows: more PI; more field trips; more academic clubs and exhibits throughout the school; send home progress reports to show student success under assisted programs; better teacher communication; tutors for all grades; buy school supplies for students to use at home

bring in more educational aspect; involve the principal and outside personalities; less sweet pastries and more nutritional food (some parents have offered to donate toward this effort this year); have it open for mother and father to attend together; Saturday morning outing; coffee
Mrs. Graves’ Notes:
I am already planning on a raffle next year ($5 gift cards, AZ Kelley shirts, etc.). Pencil Partners will be invited. Was thinking about a kickball tournament???
Title I Funds Vote and Parent Involvement Surveys!!!
Parents,
Copies of the Title I Funds and Parent Involvement Surveys will be sent home tomorrow (one piece of paper, front and back). On the front of the paper is the vote for the use of Title I funds to determine how we are able to spend our money for the upcoming school year. (Planning is currently taking place to revise our School Improvement Plan (SIP) for next year.)
On the back of that vote, there is a Parent Involvement Survey to fill out as well. This also is a very important piece of our planning and documentation.
I encourage you to complete this and return it in your child’s folder. Even if your child will not attend Kelley next year, we still need you to fill out the survey! Each teacher is required to make 3 attempts to have these completed, so beware- you might see it come home several times! These surveys are vital to our planning and documentation processes through our federally funded Title I money. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email or at extension 2302.
Sincerely,
ESEA Planning Facilitator, A.Z. Kelley Elementary

Hello Everyone,
A meeting has been planned to discuss the location of two new schools (elementary and middle) proposed for the Antioch community. The meeting will be held this Thursday, April 11th at Priest Lake Community Baptist Church located at 2754 Anderson Road, Nashville, TN 37217.
Currently Lakeview Elementary Design Center is at 122% capacity and is projected to be at 130% capacity at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year. Likewise Edison Elementary is 112% capacity and is projected to be at 115% capacity at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year. This means more portables in less secure areas at these schools.
I hope you will plan to attend this very important meeting to hear information on site selection, traffic studies and more. Public comments will also be heard at this meeting.
Whether you are in favor of or opposed to this plan, now is the time to let your voice be heard. Please pass this information along to all in our community.

Subject: I forgot to open the door ...
“Dad, aren’t you going to open the door?”
That’s what I heard from my fifteen-year-old son Chance one morning not long ago.
We have several routines we go through every morning before he leaves for school. One is sitting together for a few minutes to read some wisdom and maybe talk for a minute. We’ve been doing that probably seven or eight years.
But lately there’s another routine that’s been taking place not long after that, and it’s really no big deal ... or so I thought.
So that morning, we finished reading and then Chance left the room to do whatever else he does to get ready. After a few minutes, I heard him say from the front of the house, “Dad...?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you going to open the door?”
I said, “What’re you talking about?”
And he said again, “Aren’t you going to open the front door?”
I was thinking, You’re almost sixteen; you’re as tall as I am now. I’m pretty sure you can open your own door!
I’d forgotten about the other part of our morning routine. He leaves pretty early, so I usually turn the light on there by the front door, open it, kiss his forehead, give him a hug, and say something like, “Hey, you’re a winner. And you have a great life and great responsibility ahead of you.”
Anyway, he reminded me about that, and it struck me as a sign that he places some value on it. He wanted his dad to open the door!
Now, what difference does it make if I go through this routine? Well, as a dad of a teenager, it affirmed my role in his life—and that doesn’t happen much anymore.
Read on in this week’s blog for some ways this might apply to you and some encouragement for your fathering. As always, I’ve also provided some practical Action Points.
What has helped you connect with your teenager? Please join the discussion at the blog or on our Facebook page.
Keep up the good work, dad.
Carey Casey
