Toolkit for the 8th and 9th grade Selection Process

Good Morning Cane Ridge Families, Copy and paste http://www.mnps.org/pages/mnps/About_Us/MNPS_Schools/School_Options/8th_9th_academy_pathways to see a toolkit for the 8th and 9th grade Selection Process. At the moment your current 8th and 9th graders are in the process of choosing their high-school academies. Follow the link to learn more about their options. Below you may review the first two (of many) FAQ’s included in the toolkit: 8th and 9th Grade Pathway Selection Process Q. Why are all 8th & 9th graders being asked to complete an Optional Schools Application this year? (We intend to send our child to their zoned high school, why do we need to complete an application?) For the 2015-2016 school year, all students entering 9th and 10th grades (current 8th and 9th graders) may select the high school they wish to attend based on their specific interests and the academic programs available at that school. Using the school options application process, students will have the opportunity to select their top seven choices of academic pathways. When selecting a high school, students and parents/guardians need to prioritize the specific academic pathways they want. Several pathways at the same school or similar pathways in different schools may be selected, but no more than seven may be chosen. Students will be placed in available seats during the random selection process. Note: Students choosing to attend their zoned schools will be guaranteed a spot in a pathway at that school, but may not get their top choices. Antioch High, Cane Ridge High and Overton High are only available to families who live within the school zone. Parent permission will be required for a student to attend a school outside his/her school zone. Some of the high schools do not have academy pathways (East, Hume-Fogg, MLK, Big Picture, Middle College) so students will select only the school if choosing one of these. All students who apply and who meet the enrollment requirement of these schools will be included in the selection process. Q. Why are 8th & 9th graders being asked to choose an academic pathway this year as part of the Optional Schools Application process? Starting in the 2015-16 school year, students in zoned high schools will participate in classes connected to their chosen Academy pathway beginning in their freshman year of high school rather than only participating in a Freshmen Academy and selecting their academic pathway prior to their sophomore year. This change means students will be selecting their academic pathway in the 8th grade going forward. The Academies of Nashville are small learning communities within the 12 zoned high schools. The Academies each have a theme with a variety of pathways intended to attract students based on their interests and the options they are considering for future college study and career. Participating in this selection process is important even for those planning to attend their zoned school because students who don’t proactively select an academic pathway will be assigned one based on available space, which may or may not be focused on a topic of interest to them. Questions From Twitter...

1. Were parents notified of the awards ceremony? - As far as I know, no. (I am not involved in planning the awards ceremonies however.) It is not a grand scale sort of event. It takes place in the library, with the teachers and other students. It's simply a small way for the teachers to recognize members of their class. 2. Could there possibly be more parent events at night? -The answer is yes and no. We have many events at night throughout the year... music performances, PTA events, Family Literacy Night in the Spring. There are also early morning (before school events)such as GradeSpeed Parent Training and All Pro Dad (all parents are welcome, though it is directed toward dads). It seems like there may be many parent involvement events during the school day, however, really the only ones that we host are School Improvement Team, and we had a Standards Training. I have nothing to do with PTA planning. Some events we do need to hold during the day. According to Title I, we must offer events at varying times. If there are any more questions, or you have concerns, please feel free to let me know at emily.graves@mnps.org or 941-7535ext2110. Questions such as these are also great to address at the School Improvement Team meetings. (If you cannot make it, you can always request the topic be addressed.)If there is a meeting you are unable to attend and would like to have the minutes passed to you, I am happy to do so! Sincerely, Emily Graves SIT Lead, A.Z. Kelley ES

Information forwarded to us from the Pencil Foundation reguarding background checks. Please contact emily.graves@mnps.org for more info if needed.

This email is sent on behalf of the PENCIL Foundation regarding school volunteers who require background checks and those who do not. Please read carefully to prepare for the upcoming school year. Background checks are conducted by the PENCIL Foundation as a service to MNPS. For your convenience, the information below has been excerpted from MNPS policies SP 6.151 and IM 4.105. Please refer to these guidelines as you decide who does or does not need a background check and which type of background check is required. NO BACKGROUND CHECK Volunteer Chaperones who attend an activity field trip are not required to submit to a background check, provided that a district employee is in attendance. PENCIL BACKGROUND CHECK 1. Volunteer chaperones who are parents/guardians wishing to attend overnight or out of state field trips must have a PENCIL background check. Chaperones must receive a favorable result prior to departure. 2. Community volunteers must complete the PENCIL background check process upon request of the building principal. In general, volunteers in contact with students (e.g. tutors, mentors, classroom helpers) need this, while one-time guest speakers or volunteers not in direct contact with students (e.g. landscaping volunteers) do not. However, PENCIL always defers to the discretion of the principal. NON-PENCIL BACKGROUND CHECK Volunteer chaperones who are not parents/guardians of students wishing to attend overnight or out of state field trips must submit to a criminal background check and fingerprinting. The fingerprinting and background check may be done at 2601 Bransford Avenue or through another agency that administers fingerprinting. The chaperone or the school will pay the fingerprinting cost. Chaperones must receive a favorable result prior to departure.

It will be open from 9am to 1pm at 5434 Bell Forge Lane East (parking lot of Lakeshore Christian Church) every Saturday through October.

TCAP Time for 3rd and 4th!

It is TCAP time! Students in grades 3-4 will take the TCAP standardized achievement test tomorrow, April 29, through Friday, May 2. The testing will take well over 7 hours to complete. The majority of the testing will take place in the mornings. At school, we plan to help students do their very best during testing by: • Ensuring the school building is quiet and calm. • Rewarding students for concentrating and doing their best. • Carefully pacing the testing to avoid fatigue. • Praising students’ efforts daily. • Providing a daily snack and a break in between sections of the test as well as peppermint gum to help concentrate. At home, parents can greatly help by: • Praising your children for their best efforts, but avoiding stress about testing. • Ensuring your child has a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast each day. • Making sure your child arrives to school on time. If your child is late, he or she will not be able to enter the classroom until the next part of the test begins. Thank you for your help! Our students have performed extremely well for our first seven years, and we are expecting this year’s results to be even better!

PARCC vs TCAP for 2014-2015

As you are probably aware, the TN General Assembly recently voted to delay the PARCC Assessment for 2014-15. This means that students in grades 3+ will continue taking the TCAP Achievement and EOC tests next year. Also, the State will begin an RFP process seeking competitive bids for assessments in 2015-16 (and beyond) so it is possible that TN will never administer the PARCC assessment. the general Assembly did not approve the measure to roll back the implementation of the CCSS so as of now, we have an additional year of instruction based on the CCSS with assessment/accountability based on the TN SPIs. Lots of decisions remain for next year such as: Will there be additional SPIs dropped in ELA and/or Math? How does this affect the MAAS assessment for 2014-15? Does this have any impact on a previous decision to not assess Social Studies at the State level in 2014-15? How does this impact DEA and/or the current MNPS budget already sent to the Mayor? I will post more as I hear it. Just keeping you in the loop :)

this Saturday's huge egg hunt at 1266 Donelson Pike from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

There is an Annual egg hunt and we expect well over 5,000 people to attend. We will have 4 separate, age-appropriate hunts and give away over 5,000 prizes. There will be face painting, a stage show, inflatable bounce house and slide, costumed characters and the Easter Bunny. We will 'hide' 30,000 eggs and at least 500 of them will contain numbers to collect a prize from the prize tent. I am not sure who "we" is to be quite honest! I got an email with an address, and it sounds like fun. Just know it's not an AZ Kelley event! Emily
