School Choices for Parents

This year parents have more choices than ever before. Learn about the full range of choices available under No Child Left Behind and more.

Public School Choice
Supplemental Educational Services
Charter Schools
Magnet Schools
Private Education
Homeschooling
The No Child Left Behind Act provides new education options for many families. This federal law allows parents to choose other public schools or take advantage of free tutoring if their child attends a school that needs improvement. Also, parents can choose another public school if the school their child attends is not making benchmark levels or unsafe (MNPS has no schools identified as “unsafe”). The law also supports the growth of more independent charter schools, funds some services for children in private schools, and provides certain protections for homeschooling parents. Finally, it requires that states and local school districts provide information to help parents make informed educational choices for their child. I hope you find this information helpful.

· I have attached the Choice Applications by cluster and a Public School Choice Facts and Questions Sheet.

Approximately 70% of adults with disabilities are unemployed in the U.S. These individuals are highly dedicated, talented, and genuinely want to work. And now, many of them are thanks to the strong partnerships formed through the MNPS Exceptional Education Department's Community Based Transition Program. This program has opened the door to internship opportunities, work-based training, and even gainful employment. But the students aren't the only ones who benefit.

The Department of Exceptional Education is hosting a fair to spotlight the Transition Program. Representatives from state and local agencies and community service providers will provide families with information about post high school options in our community such as:

Advocacy
Employment
Adult Living Options
Post Secondary Education
Recreation and Leisure Activities
There will also be more than 50 vendors on hand to give information about their services and products, as well as refreshments!

Check out this video for an in-depth look at the power of community-based transition programs.

TCAP TESTING : APRIL 13th - 20th

Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) tests are given to students in grades 3-8 each spring while students taking high school courses take End of Course (EOC) exams. TCAP tests are timed, multiple choice assessments that measure skills in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Both TCAP and EOC tests are important to students and help determine how schools and our district are classified under the federal No Child Left Behind law. To help students do their best on the tests, we have compiled a list of test tips, videos, links to practice test and other useful resources.

Parents of all children enrolled in schools that receive Title 1 funding and that are identified for school improvement are given the opportunity to transfer their children to a school that has not been so identified.

As a parent, you can choose for your child to attend one of the schools listed as CHOICE for your child; or you can choose for your child to remain in their current school and receive SES (Supplemental Educational Services) tutoring.

What is Supplemental Educational Services (SES)?
