Busy, busy, busy next few weeks!

There are many opportunities to be involved at your child's school. As a working mom, I understand that it is not always possible to attend all of our parent involvement events. (I have been a stay at home mom as well, and understand that you have your own set of obstacles in attending events!) However, some of my favorite school memories are of my mom shaperoning a field trip, or my dad attending a class party. Even though they were unable to be at every event, when they did attend it made me feel like they were taking an interest in me and what I did. If you ever have questions about our Parent Involvement programs, please contact me at emily.graves@mnps.org or 941-7535 ext. 2302.

Date Night Idea from All Pro Dad

Just thought I would pass on this email I received...

We are proud to partner with the movie Courageous, hitting theaters September 30th. Follow four police officers as they battle external and internal forces to keep their family first. For more on the movie and to see the incredibly moving trailer, please be sure to visit the All Pro Dad Courageous page.

Courageous opens in theaters this Friday. Hollywood keeps score based on how a film does on opening weekend, so plan a date night with your spouse to see this extraordinary film this weekend! Find the nearest theater showing Courageous at the Courageous theater list.

All Metro Employees, friends, and family,

The Davidson County Clerk's Office is doing our part to inform Americans about this annual Passport event. Please join us along with the U.S. Department of State as we celebrate "Passport Day in the USA", this Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 10 AM - 3 PM at our Main Office located at 700 Second Avenue South in the Howard Office Building. Our office will be open to issue passports and answer any questions that residents may have (regardless of what state they live in). Most U.S. Passports are processed as routine for $143.00, but may be more or less depending on age and turnaround time (Please note the attached fee schedule).

We'll also be renewing Tennessee Driver Licenses for class D and M, name changes for first marriages, and address changes. If you are like me and time slips away during the week, stop by this Saturday. We'll be here to help.

Email sent to teachers this week about All Pro Dad

This week you will see a flyer going home about All Pro Dad. Jeff Salyers is helping me with this... I am VERY grateful. This is a link to our chapter webpage. If any single mom's, uncles, etc. ask about it, they are welcome as well. You don't have to be a dad, but just to let you know the curriculum is aimed at dads. My hope is that this will be a wonderful way to reach out to parents. Many peope have heard of it during NFL commericals and press, so that might draw a few more people than we usually get. I am very excited!

Brown Bus Updates from August Q and A

Kathy Tamble, our school guidance counselor, is on charge of bus issues this year. She told me that we currently do not have a brown bus driver. There is apparently a bus driver shortage. Drivers of other routes are doubling up and helping out by picking up the children who would ride the brown bus. That is why there are such inconsitencies and problems. If you have questions you probably need to call the Transportation Dept. at Central Office.

She said all children are allowed breakfast when they arrive at school, even if the bus is late. The cafeteria staff may need to put up the hot items, but cereal and other items are offered.

Letter From Mayor about 5K/ 100 Miles

Dear Metro Employees,

This summer thousands of Nashvillians, including many of you, participated in our “Walk 100 Miles” health challenge. To keep the momentum going, I’m hosting a free 5K walk/run on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. starting at the Public Square Park in front of the Metro Courthouse. And I want you, your friends and family to join me. Since this is a 5K walk and run, this event is ideal for individuals of all fitness levels.

In preparation for this 3.1-mile event, we’re hosting a free, nine-week training program that kicks off this Saturday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. at the new McCabe Park Community Center, 101 46th Avenue North. We’ll also be celebrating the grand opening of this 25,000-square-foot facility, which includes a gymnasium, fitness center, indoor walking track, and other amenities.

Starting this Saturday, training sessions for the 5K also will be held at Shelby Bottoms Nature Center, Antioch Community Center and Hadley Park Community Center. Visit our Facebook at www.facebook.com/mayorschallenge5k to view the complete training schedule.

You can participate in the Mayor’s Challenge 5K Walk/Run as an individual or a team.
It’s more important than ever for all of us to get serious about improving our health. And I hope you’ll find this 5K challenge as a fun and inspiring way to be active.

Sincerely,

Karl F. Dean
Mayor
